From Ingolstadt to Munich, Nuremberg, and Regensburg: day trips by train

Ingolstadt’s underrated trump card is its location. Hardly any other Bavarian city is as conveniently situated between the state's major destinations. Munich, Nuremberg, and Regensburg are three completely different cities, all easily accessible by train and perfect for a day trip. Staying here means you haven't just booked a city, but an entire region.

Munich

The high-speed ICE train gets you to Munich in about 40 minutes. Some locals don't even get to their own offices that quickly. Regional trains take a little longer, but they run frequently and are covered by the Deutschlandticket.

For a day trip: Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt in the morning, a beer garden for lunch, and in the afternoon, the Deutsches Museum, the Pinakotheken art galleries, or a stroll through the English Garden to watch the surfers on the Eisbach wave. By evening, you’ll be back in your apartment, having avoided paying Munich hotel prices.

Nuremberg

Heading north is just as fast: the ICE reaches Nuremberg via the high-speed line in about half an hour.

For history buffs, this is the perfect day trip. The Imperial Castle with its panoramic views, the medieval old town, and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. For the darker chapters of history, there is the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds. In between, enjoy "Drei im Weggla"—three Nuremberg bratwursts in a bun. If you visit during Advent, the Christkindlesmarkt is a must, so plan to arrive early.

Regensburg

The third direction leads downstream along the Danube. Regional trains connect Ingolstadt and Regensburg in about an hour, making it ideal for the Deutschlandticket.

Regensburg arguably has the most beautiful old town in Southern Germany: a medieval UNESCO World Heritage site, the Gothic St. Peter's Cathedral, and the Stone Bridge over the Danube. Right next to it is the Historic Sausage Kitchen, one of the oldest cookshops in the world. The city is compact, and everything is within walking distance. If you like, you can add a boat trip to the Walhalla memorial.
