A weekend in Ingolstadt - the perfect 48-hour itinerary

Most people know Ingolstadt only from driving past it on the A9 motorway. That is a pity, because those who take the exit will find one of Bavaria's most beautiful medieval old towns, four impressive museums, and the Danube flowing right through the city center. Since everything is within walking distance, you can experience a surprising amount in just one weekend. You won't need a car, just comfortable shoes.

Saturday morning: Old Town

Start at the Kreuztor. This 14th-century Gothic city gate is Ingolstadt's landmark and the perfect starting point for a stroll through the narrow streets. From there, it is just a few minutes to the Liebfrauenmünster, the largest hall church in Bavaria.

If you are in town on a Wednesday or Saturday, a detour to the weekly market at Theaterplatz is well worth it. You will find regional producers, fresh fruit, cheese, and a few snack stalls. It is a great place for a quick second breakfast, and if you are cooking in your apartment, you can stock up for the evening.

Saturday afternoon: Museums

Ingolstadt offers almost too many choices for a single weekend. Two museums are manageable, and all are located in or near the old town:

• Bavarian Army Museum in the New Castle, military history housed in one of Bavaria's most significant late-medieval castle complexes, located directly on the Danube.
• Museum of Concrete Art, for those who prefer a modern and minimalist aesthetic.
• Asam Church Maria de Victoria, strictly speaking not a museum, but the ceiling fresco by the Asam brothers is considered the largest flat ceiling painting in the world. Ten minutes is all you need, and you will not soon forget it.
• German Museum of the History of Medicine, unusual, fascinating, and not for the faint of heart.

Saturday evening

Sunday morning: The Danube and Klenzepark

Sunday is for the water. Cross the Danube to reach Klenzepark, the former regional fortress surrounding the Reduit Tilly and now the city's most beautiful park. If the weather is nice, you can continue from there into the Glacis, the green belt encircling the old town.

Sunday afternoon: Audi or outlet shopping
