Ingolstadt with children: Excursions and activities for families

When traveling with children, the itinerary is everything. Too much on the schedule is overwhelming, too much driving is frustrating, and eventually, everyone loses interest. Ingolstadt makes it easy for families in this regard: it rarely takes more than ten minutes to get from a museum to a playground, and most places are easily accessible on foot or by bike.

Right on your doorstep: Klenzepark and the Danube

Klenzepark, located on the south side of the Danube, is the city's classic family destination. It features large meadows, playgrounds, water features, and historic fortifications where children can spend hours climbing and playing explorer. It is the perfect spot for a summer picnic; you can pick up supplies beforehand at the weekly market at Theaterplatz or at a nearby supermarket.

Animal encounters

The Wasserstern small animal zoo is compact, charming, and affordable—a great way to spend a morning with younger children, and easily reachable from the city center on foot or by bike.

A bit further out is the wildlife park at the Baggersee, featuring deer, wild boar, and forest trails. It is spacious and free of charge. In the summer, you can easily combine your visit with a trip to the swimming lake.

On rainy days

The indoor swimming pool is just a few minutes' walk from Donaustraße. You won't find a shorter trip from your apartment to the water. In the summer, the outdoor pool takes over.

Two museums are particularly well-suited for children. The Bavarian Army Museum in the New Castle is impressive just for its architecture, complete with suits of armor. And at the kelten römer museum manching, about a 15-minute drive away, you can explore one of Europe's largest Celtic settlements, presented in a way that is engaging even for school-aged children.

Excursions in the surrounding area

If you are staying for several days, it is worth looking beyond the city limits. In the Altmühltal valley, about 30 to 45 minutes away, you can go canoeing, hunt for fossils, and visit castles. Legoland in Günzburg is about an hour's drive away and makes for a full day out. You can also reach Munich quickly by train, offering everything from the Deutsches Museum to the Hellabrunn Zoo.
